Misinformation on Misinformation: Conceptual and Methodological Challenges

Alarmist narratives about online misinformation continue to gain traction despite evidence that its prevalence and impact are overstated. Drawing on research examining the use of big data in social science reception studies, we identify six misconceptions highlight conceptual methodological challenges they raise. The first set concerns circulation misinformation. First, scientists focus media because it is methodologically convenient, but not just a problem. Second, internet rife with or news, memes entertaining content. Third, falsehoods do spread faster than truth; how define (mis)information influences our results their practical implications. second Fourth, people believe everything see internet: sheer volume engagement should be conflated belief. Fifth, more likely uninformed misinformed; surveys overestimate misperceptions say little causal influence Sixth, people’s behavior overblown as often “preaches choir.” To appropriately understand fight misinformation, future needs address these challenges.
